Our number one travel piece, the Patagonia Nano puff jacket, is lightweight, warm, and water repellent. Partnered with a rain shell, it will keep you warm in most temperatures and protect you from the elements. I always travel with my Nano puff Vest and also took my Nano puff Jacket on this most recent journey. Both did their duty without overloading my suitcase, and with their convenient packing pockets, they were easy to stow when the midday sun appeared.

While on a lunch break in Chamonix at the base of Mont Blanc, I was surprised to see a brick-and-mortar Icebreaker store – something I didn’t even know existed! Our staff has been singing the praises of Icebreaker and merino wool for years, and in fact, it composed the majority of my apparel for this trip. It’s wicking ability, breathable fabric, doesn’t support bacteria growth, so you can wear it many times without having to wash it. I used Icebreaker as daily camisoles, pajama tops, and bottoms (2 pairs for 14 days!), casual tops, and active tee shirts. I also used a pair of merino wool leggings at least five days in varying temps. They really are so breathable your body adjusts to them without overheating!

Unsure of the attire I needed for dinners out and special excursions, I was very careful to pack casual tops and a couple of dressier items. I took only synthetic, wrinkle-free, or resistant items that contained no cotton and packed flat. My favorites were from Columbia, Free Fly (made with bamboo, which contains many of the merino benefits), and Ex-Officio. We carry these styles year-round and always look for those you can dress up or wear all day.
