Fly Fishing in Western North Carolina
The history of fly fishing varies greatly from source to source. Some date it back just a few hundred years, where others date it to being a sport for over 30,000 years. Where fly fishing originates is an interesting topic but here at Highland Hiker, we don't just talk about fly fishing, we go fly fishing.
We are the only fly fish outfitter in Highlands, NC and we carry a complete selection of rods, reels, flies, and all the gear you may need to go fly fishing. And for those who are a little rusty or have never fly fished, we have a clinic just for you. Our fly fishing clinic teaches the basics about what type of fish are in the area, how to read water, spot fish, and choose the right fly pattern. Stop by our store and our knowledgable staff can help you pick out the gear you will need to go on your own fly fishing adventure.
Western North Carolina's more popular fly fishing species include Brook Trout, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout which reside in many of the rivers surrounding Highlands, NC including the Davidson River, the East Fork of the French Broad, and the Tuckasegee.
As with any type of fishing, fly fishing in North Carolina requires those 16 years of age and older to acquire a fishing license through the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Here at the Highland Hiker, we practice catch and release as a conservation tool. We ask that you do the same so our trout population will continue to spawn for years to come.
